Why are Bill Graham rock posters sought after by collectors?

These rock posters are desirable to some for their aesthetic value. For others who attended the concert, they offer a commemoration of the event. In recent years, a collector’s market has evolved alongside a growing awareness of the history of this art.

What are some different editions of these vintage posters?

Graham numbered many of his vintage rock posters. The first series began as BG-1 in 1966 with a poster advertising an appearance of the Jefferson Airplane. It concluded with BG-289. This poster publicized the June 1972 appearance of the Rolling Stones at the Winterland Ballroom. Nearly all of the performers featured in this initial numbered series played at the Fillmore West. Graham also commissioned posters for his productions at other venues. These are considered vintage but are unnumbered.

Who are some artists for vintage Bill Graham posters?

Five artists are considered to have created the more famous and desirable art. Some of these artists have gone on to enjoy careers in the fine arts:

  • Alton Kelley
  • Victor Moscoso
  • Rick Griffin
  • Wes Wilson

What are some of the different printings to look for?

Collectors consider the most desirable to be the pre-show or first-edition prints that would have been contemporary to the concert. These were printed on vellum paper. Due to their growing notoriety, Bill Graham Productions authorized second- and third-edition reprints after the fact. These vary somewhat from the first-edition prints primarily in paper stock, size, or additional markings. There are also unauthorized versions that are generally of lower quality. Digitally printed art is also present on the collector’s market.

How do you take care of your poster?

It is important to always take good care of your poster so that it will last a long time. Here are some suggestions that will help you to best care for it.

  • Avoid displaying it in direct sunlight, as the sun’s UV rays can cause it to fade and severely damage it.
  • When framing your poster, be sure to use only acid-free mounting boards and mattes.
  • If you do not want your poster displayed, it can be stored flat or rolled in a tube.
  • Make sure you store your poster in a humidity-controlled room.
  • Make sure it is located in a room that is not too hot because heat can cause damage to it.
