Dodge Caliber Complete Auto Transmissions

The Caliber was a model of five-door hatchback manufactured by Dodge from 2006 until 2012. Although some models, such as the SE, SXT, ad SRT-4, came equipped with a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission, most cars came standard with an automatic transmission. When selecting Dodge Caliber complete auto transmissions, there are different features and options to consider.

What is an automatic transmission?

A manual or automatic transmission controls the amount of power being sent to the cars wheels at a certain speed. The automatic transmission shifts the gears at certain speeds instead of manually shifting with a clutch. When the car drives at a higher speed, the transmission will shift into a higher gear and do the reverse at lower speeds.

How do you select an auto transmission?
  • Gather information on the make, model, and year of your car. This information will be used to find compatible parts. You can also use the vehicle identification number or the car registration of your Dodge vehicle to find this information as well.
  • Select a transmission type. You can select from different styles that are compatible with your existing engine.
  • Choose a brand. If you prefer to use original equipment manufactured parts, you can choose from those made by Dodge or installed into the Caliber at the factory. There are also several aftermarket options available for your car.
  • Select a drive type. All-wheel drive supplies power to each of the wheels while front-wheel drive delivers power to the front set only. The model of Caliber you have determines what drive type to select.
What types of automatic transmissions are available?
  • Conventional automatic: This type utilizes a torque converter that transfers the power from the motor to the transmission. A conventional system uses a set of gears and an electronic controller that engages the different speeds.
  • Continuously variable transmission: This type has a belt instead of gears that connect two pulleys. A continuously variable transmission can use either a fluid-filled torque converter or an automated clutch. The two pulleys can be moved closer or farther apart to provide tension.
  • Automated manual: This style allows you to switch gears both automatically and manually. When the manual mode is engaged, a lever or paddle is pressed to switch gears without needing to manually use a clutch.
  • Dual-clutch automated manual: Another type of automated manual, this type uses two separate gear shafts. One gear shaft is used for odd-numbered speeds while the other handles the even gears. The computer will automatically place the opposite gear shaft into the next gear to aid in gear changes. This style uses a clutch for each of the gear shafts.
