How does a DigitalPersona fingerprint reader work?- Stored prints are mapped using 25 to 40 unique segments of print, which are then stored as a template and encrypted. The original print image used to map the unique identifiers is then deleted. This makes reverse mapping of stored access maps nearly impossible.
- The encrypted prints themselves are specific to the product's software engine. This further reinforces security and makes identifying and assembling the unique identifiers to reverse engineer a print unlikely.
- Upon using the reader to access a device or application, the user's print is scanned and cross-referenced with the unique print map stored on the reader. Once confirmed to match the map on file, access is granted.
DigitalPersona fingerprint readers can be used for a variety of device and application access implementations.
- Operating system logins can be complemented or replaced with a biometric scan. A fingerprint scan request is added to the system's login that will require a permissible fingerprint to be scanned in order to access the system. This feature can also be added to the lock system function on Windows.
- Internet logins can also be accessed by a print scan. Username and password combinations can be programmed to be accessed by the DigitalPersona fingerprint reader, allowing users to log-in to websites, email, and other password-protected locations with a simple fingerprint scan.
- Similarly, applications on the computer can be programmed to require a fingerprint scan in order to access the program, providing additional security for sensitive software and data.

Fingerprint readers come in two different forms.
- Stagnant: With this type of scanner the finger must be dragged over the scanning area in order to get a reading.
- Moving: To get a reading with this fingerprint reader, you simply have to place your finger on the scanning area. The device will then scan your fingerprint.
