F Male Coax Cables and Connectors

A coaxial (coax) cable is a type of transmission line used in broadcast television, internet, home security, and many other common applications. Typically, consumers are most familiar with its use connecting cable television (CATV) boxes and internet modems to service providers’ outside networks. Invented in the late 19th century, the technology has many variations; however, most cables and devices used by consumers follow the RG6 standard.

What Is a Coaxial Connector?

Devices and cables using this technology need a way to connect together. Connectors are simply the plugs and ports that allow this to happen. There are two main categories typically available:

  • Male/Female Plugs: These are added to cables to allow them to connect with other devices. The most common type is a male plug that can be slid over the end of an exposed wire and crimped down to secure it in place. This process requires a specialized crimping tool. Other variations are also available which may attach to the wire in different ways or allow the cable to have a female end-point instead. Plugs may be coated with a high-conductivity metal such as silver or gold to improve the connection strength.
  • Female to Female Connectors: These devices simply screw into cables to allow two male end-points to be attached to each other. There are also, less common, male to male and male to female versions.
What Does F-Type Mean?

F-Type is the most common type of connector, and it is an end-point to the cable that allows it to connect to other devices. The male end of this familiar design features a central wire surrounded by a captive nut with internal threading. The center pin can be inserted into the middle of the female port and the nut tightened on the female end’s external threading.

What Does BNC Mean?

BNC is short for Bayonet Neill-Concelman and is another connector standard. Its purpose is to allow quick connecting and disconnecting of coax. Although BNC has high adoption in military and broadcast applications, it is not as common with consumer devices. It can usually be connected to F-Type items using an adapter.

What is RG6?

RG6 is a standard for coax that is most commonly used for CATV installations. It is used to route and distribute TV signal throughout a building. Many homes have RG-6 cabling installed in the walls, connecting several wall plates to an outside network maintained by the service provider. This can be used to transmit television, internet, home security, and other signals around the house.

What Other Coaxial Accessories Are Available?

There are a range of accessories for connecting and extending the applications of coax:

  • Splitters/Switches: These allow the connection from one coaxial cable to be split to two or more. They are most often used to distribute the outside connection to a service provider to multiple access points throughout a building.
  • Adapters/Converters: Most devices using coaxial use F-Type connectors. However, this is not universal. So, there are numerous adapters available that can convert a coaxial signal for use with other end-points, such as RCA, UHF (Ultra High Frequency), or BNC.
