How to Make Your Car Rock to the Music

Car audio is one of the areas where people love to show off their individuality. Throw in a decent subwoofer and you can feel the music in your chest, not just listen to it with your ears.

How Do Speakers Work?

All speakers are basically pumps; they use magnetic fields from the voice coil to vibrate a diaphragm that then pushes the air in order to create sound waves. One of the catches of this design is that it's hard to design speakers that can cover the entire hearing range well. Most speakers fall into one of four categories:

  • Tweeter: The smallest major category of speakers, tweeters deal with reproducing high frequency sound.
  • Midrange: A midrange aims to cover the entire range with one speaker. It either stands on its own or works with a woofer and tweeter in a three-way enclosure.
  • Woofer: These handle low frequencies. Many speaker systems can get by with a woofer and tweeter without the need for a midrange, though any system with multiple speakers needs a crossover to direct the high frequencies to one driver and the low frequencies to another.
  • Subwoofer: The final kind of speaker, subs handle the really deep bass. Unlike other speakers they usually install singly rather than in pairs because really low sounds aren't directional, so you can't hear the stereo effect anyway.

How Do You Choose a Subwoofer?

Choosing and installing a subwoofer depends on a wide range of factors, ranging from the kind of car you have to your existing audio system.

  • Enclosures: Most subwoofers come in either a sealed or ported enclosure. Sealed enclosures require more power, but they produce sound that's more suitable for jazz and classical music. Rock and rap fans may be happier with a ported enclosure. Ports reduce the power requirements by lowering the air resistance inside the box, and also help generate more of a deep booming sound.
  • Amplification: Subs move a lot of air, and the more air you move the more RMS power you need. Don't forget the power handling: a system with 200 Watts RMS can handle that much power continuously, and somewhat more at peak.
  • Wiring: Don't forget to put a fuse in the lead wire when installing a JL Audio subwoofer. The more power you are pushing through the line, the more important safety becomes.

Music is For Listening

Even a small-format top-mount sub can give you great sound if you've built everything else around it. A good 4-Ohm subwoofer from should be more than enough to provide excellent sound quality and low frequency response that will ensure you can feel the music as the beat hits 20 Hz. A JL subwoofer only needs 0.15 cubic feet of volume for the enclosure, 0.25 when ported and has plenty of power for accurate bass.
