What is DDR4 Computer RAM?

Double data rate (DDR) random access memory (RAM) is an essential hardware component in everything from laptop and desktop computers to smartphones and tablets. DDR4 is the fourth and most modern generation of RAM from computer hardware designers. DDR4 chips are common in consumer computers, such as Windows or Mac laptops or notebooks.  

Overview of Features

RAM modules have a large number of specific functions in individual and networked computers. The most important features to understand when evaluating DDR4 RAM are:

  • DIMM: The dual in-line memory module (DIMM) is a crucial sub-component in any RAM memory chip. A DIMM is an integrated circuit that can work in a server, personal computer, and machine learning workstation. In Kingston 1 GB DDR4, the DIMM fits into 72-pin to 288-pin slots. Some DIMMs use error correcting code (ECC) memory to identify and delete corrupt data that pages onto the module. Non-ECC DIMMs can often detect corrupt data but are not able to correct the internal errors. 
  • Clock Speed: This term refers to the speed at which a module can respond to file transfer or paging requests from a computer's central processor unit (CPU).
