Why is Harry Potter’s dad called Prongs?

In the Harry Potter universe, Harry Potter's father, James, had a clan of three friends who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The clan, who ultimately created the map, secretly became unregistered Animagi (witches or wizards who can morph into animals at will), in order to assist their friend, Remus, during difficult werewolf transformations. James Potter's Animagus form was a shining, red stag. Hence the name, Prongs.

Who are the Marauders?

The Marauders were a group of four young men in the Gryffindor house at Hogwarts. The Marauders consisted of Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, and Harry Potter's father, James Potter. The Marauder known as Sirius was Harry Potter's godfather, and the Marauder known as Remus was Harry's favorite teacher. The group explored the castle and grounds of Hogwarts thoroughly throughout their tenure at the school, and eventually, they created the Marauder's Map. The Marauder's Map is a magical document revealing all of the school, inside and outside. The Marauder's Map points out all classrooms, hallways, every corner of the castle, every inch of the grounds, and all the secret passageways hidden within Hogwarts' walls. The Marauder's Map can also accurately identify and provide the location of each person on the grounds, portrayed by a dot on the map.

Who gave Harry Potter the Marauder's Map?

The Marauder's Map was eventually confiscated by the caretaker of Hogwarts, Argus Filch, during the Marauders’ final year at school. Eventually, Harry Potter's friends, Fred and George Weaseley, stole the Marauder's Map from Filch's office during their first year at Hogwarts. Fred and George gave Harry Potter the Marauder's Map in Harry's third year.

How was the Marauder's Map made?

The Marauder's Map was created by four Gryffindors: Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, and James Potter while they attended wizarding school from 1975 to 1978. A map of the castle’s interior developed over time with the help of James Potter's invisibility cloak. The four Marauders created the map using the Homonculous Charm, a powerful charm that enchanted the Marauder’s Map to track movements of everyone in the castle.
