Pitman and Idler Arms for GMC Savana 2500

The GMC Savana 2500 uses a parallel steerage linkage system to control the steering of the vehicle. Two of the essential parts of this linkage system are called the pitman and idler arms.

How do pitman and idler arms work?

Both arms are used to support the steerage system in the Savana. The idler arm holds up the relay rod, also called the center link, in position. The relay rod ensures both front wheels move in a uniform motion so you can steer and turn your vehicle properly. The arm is connected to the relay rod and the frame. The pitman arm is connected to the steering box and the relay rod. The connection at the relay rod is made by using a ball joint. The ball joint moves in a way that converts the vertical motion coming from the box and turns it into a horizontal movement the steerage linkage uses to turn the wheels left or right.

How do you replace a pitman arm?

The pitman arm is secured to the steering box by a large bolt. You need to lift the truck up in the air so you have enough room to work and remove the nut to the big bolt. You may need a breaker bar to loosen the nut. You will also need a special tool called a “pitman arm puller” to separate the pitman arm from the box. You have to hit the end of the puller with a rubber hammer to force the connection apart. Then, all you will have to do is remove the bolt and cotter pin that connects the part to the relay rod. The part should pull right out from under the truck. Put the new one in and reconnect everything.

How do you replace an idler arm?

This part is connected to the relay rod and the frame of the vehicle. You need to lift the GMC Savana 2500 up in the air to make sure you have room to safely do the job. The first thing you want to do is disconnect the idler arm from the frame. The bolts go through the frame near the axle of the wheels. Remove the bolts and the cotter pin. The second thing is to detach the idler from the rod by using the puller tool again. If the puller does not fit, slide in a pickle fork between the rod and the idler and use that to separate the connection. Install the new idler in place of the old one and reconnect everything.
