Shocks & Struts para BMW X3

BMW X3 Shocks and Struts

BMW X3 is known for its sturdy build and smooth ride. While the quality of the ride is often a matter of personal preference, upgrading the suspension system with new shocks and struts can improve performance. You often hear the terms shocks and struts used interchangeably, but shocks can be one component of the strut or part of a suspension that includes only shock absorbers and springs without having a strut assembly.

Do all cars have struts?

The presence and configuration of struts in cars varies from vehicle to vehicle. Some vehicles have no strut assembly, some have struts only on the front tires, and other cars have them on all four tires. This is true whether your vehicle has a standard suspension or air suspension. The presence or lack of struts affects performance and handling. The shock absorbers only function is to keep your BMW X3 from bouncing around on bumpy or uneven surfaces. The strut is part of the chassis and works with the spring to also control how high the vehicle sits off of the frame. Struts also work with the steering to control side-to-side motion.

How often should shocks and struts be replaced?

Youll recognize a noticeable difference before and after shocks and struts are replaced. Whatever type of suspension system you have, it should be inspected according to the same schedule as your oil, front end alignment, and brakes are inspected, which is about every 5,000 miles. Most manufacturers recommend replacement at about 50,000 miles or when you notice a deterioration in performance or handling.

What are signs its time to replace shocks or struts?

The shocks are used for damping excessive bounce while driving. You can test your suspension in two different ways. The first is to push down on the bumper over each tire that has shocks or struts installed, one at a time. If the vehicle pops right back up to its normal position but no further, your suspension is good. If it bounces higher or continues to move, you may need to consider replacement. If one of the shocks is bad on the front or rear tire, the other suspension component on that end should be replaced at the same time. You should also raise the vehicle to check for oil leaks around the brakes and suspension.

How do you replace shocks and struts?

Shocks by themselves are easy parts to replace. They are one self-contained component that simply requires a few bolts to be removed and the new shock put in its place. Be sure to follow the instructions included with the kit you choose.

Struts have several parts, including an external coil that needs to be compressed first if the whole unit is being replaced. If the only part of the suspension that needs service is the strut cartridge, that can be removed easily from under the hood instead of under the car.
