From Folk Dress to Oktoberfest: Women’s Traditional German Dirndls Dresses

Though historically dirndls were an Austrian or German dress worn primarily by peasant women and were very practical items of clothing, now they are fashionable among all social classes during festivals in Austria, Germany, and anywhere an Oktoberfest event is held. These more stylish versions started to become favoured by the upper class as long ago as 1870, and they have been going strong ever since. Though traditionally made of simpler material, a contemporary German dirndl can be found in many types of fabrics and styles, from heavy, wool winter versions to silk or cotton ones worn in the warmer months.

What does a traditional dirndl look like?

As these traditional garments are now generally worn to festivals and celebrations, quite a few embellishments can be seen on an authentic dirndl, though simpler versions can be donned as well. Find a range of these new or used on eBay.

  • Embroidered - Intricate embroidery is commonly seen on both the dress and apron. Traditional patterns connected to both locations and seasons as well as abstract patterns can be found.
  • Checkered - A checkered or plaid pattern sometimes replaces elaborate embroidery and is usually found either in the bodice or the skirt.
  • Lace-Up - While buttons and zippers are also used, front lacing of the bodice is a very common sight on a contemporary version of the costume, and often a complementary or contrasting colour is used.
Evolution of styles visible in dirndls

Though based on an older Austrian or German dress, contemporary dirndls can be clearly differentiated from the classic versions.

  • New - Present-day dirndls are often shorter and more flirtatious than the more classic versions. Colours are brighter and a wider array of fabric might be used.
  • Preowned - A great way to own a more contemporary style on a budget, preowned dirndls can be in almost new condition if they have been cared for properly.
  • Vintage - Vintage, traditional dirndls tend to be longer, anywhere from knee to ankle-length, and in more subdued colours. Bright embroidery and lacework is still common, however, and as they are mainly worn on celebration days, the condition can still be excellent.
Pieces included in a dirndl

Often broken into three pieces, dirndls generally consist of the dirndl dress, the blouse, and an optional apron. Waistcoats are an additional accessory that is frequently added.

  • Apron - Though commonly white with lacework details, traditional aprons can also match the colour of the embroidery or other lacework.
  • Blouse - Generally white with ruffles and frills to add visual interest, the traditional blouses can be long or short-sleeved. They provide additional coverage or modesty to the basic dirndl.
  • Dirndl - The dress portion of the outfit, or the dirndl, consists of a full skirt of varying lengths, along with a pinafore-style top. Without the addition of a blouse, it can be quite low-cut.
  • Waistcoat - Often seen in more traditional versions of the dress, the waistcoat adds a bit more volume and warmth. It can also replace the pinafore top when paired with a dirndl-style skirt.
